Conan awakens and explains that it's been three days since he was shrunk by the poison that the men in black gave him, and that he hasn't gotten any leads yet by living at the Mouri Detective Agency. He walks in on Kogoro, who is in front of the TV cheering on his favorite Idol, Okino Yoko, while watching one of her programs. Then, Conan is at elementary school, where he's apprached by Genta, Ayumi, and Mitsuhiko, who want to be friends with him. He shrugs them off and rushes to Agasa's house, where he complains to Agasa that he still has no leads to the men in black. Agasa then explains that Ran has been by again, looking for Shinichi. Then, Agasa brings out one of his new inventions he made for Conan, the voice changing bowtie! With this, Conan can imitate anyone's voice! Later that night, Genta, Ayumi, and Mitsuhiko have followed Conan back to the Mouri Detective Agency, where they see a certain someone get out of a car and go in... Mouri answers the door, and is surprised to see the famous Idol, Okino Yoko! She explains that she's been having trouble with a stalker, and that she wants Kogoro to investigate. Her manager, Yamagishi, then asks Kogoro to keep the investigation secret. And so, Kogoro, Conan, and Ran follow Yoko and Yamagishi back to Yoko's apartment to look around, and Genta, Ayumi, and Mitsuhiko have also tagged along in the trunk secretly. However, when everyone arrives at Yoko's room, they are shocked to find a dead body in the middle of the floor, with a knife in his back! Later, the police arrive, and Kogoro vigorously welcomes Inspector Megure. Conan, meanwhile has been investigating, following his natural instincts, and points out to everyone that there are a few things that are odd in the room: first, there are dried watermarks around the body, and that inside of a messy room, the chair next to the body is the only thing standing, and lastly that the heat is set extremely high. However, since Conan appears as just a 7 year old boy, he is ignored and yelled at to stay out of the way. The inspector then asks Yoko and Yamagishi if they recognize the body, and after taking a look, they claim not to have, yet Conan sees the manager secretly take something out of the corpse's hand. Yamagishi then drops it, and Conan checks it out to discover that it's a hair. Megure then stipulates that usually when a body is found in the middle of a locked room, the criminal is often the owner of that room. Yoko says that it wasn't her, and Conan then mentions that there may have been a spare key and asks who has it. Yoko replies that Yamagishi had it, which immediately prompts Kogoro to accuse him. However he says that he lost his key, which Yoko corroborates. Kogoro accepts this for now, and Conan continues to look around for clues. He finds an earring under the couch, but can't get an adult to listen to him and look, so he uses his voice changing bowtie to use an adult's voice asking the inspector to look under the couch. When the inspector takes the earring out, Yoko exclaims that the earring belongs to Ikezawa Yuuko, one of her rival Idols. Kogoro then demands that the police go and arrest her and bring her to the apartment, which the inspector agrees to. When Yuuko arrives, she is very adamant that she has nothing to do with the murder, since it happened in Yoko's room, and this was her first time here. Kogoro asks her where her earring came from then, but she shrugs him off, saying that she lost it somewhere, and it just happened to show up here. She then goes off to the restroom, insulting Yoko on the way. Conan then notices that the two Idols look exactly the same from behind, and also that Yuuko knew exactly where the bathroom was! As Conan continues to think, Ran comes up from behind and gives him a hug, saying that if Shinichi were here, he could definitely solve the case. Conan says that Shinichi will definitely come back, which is all he could possibly say. Then, when they continue questioning Yuuko, she uses a statue-of-liberty shaped lighter to light a cigarette, which prompts Conan to exclaim that the lighter is strange, and asks how she knew it was a lighter. This clues in Megure and Kogoro into the fact that she must've been in the apartment before, as they also saw her go straight to the bathroom without asking where it was! She breaks, and admits that she's been in the apartment before, but says that she was only looking for some kind of dirt on Yoko to decrease her popularity. She goes on to say that the last time she was here, a strange man followed her in and attacked her, and that she lost her earring in the struggle, and barely got away. Kogoro still claims that she must've killed him at that time, but Yuuko denies this. Then, a police officer comes in and says that the victim has been positively identified as one Akiyoshi Fujie, who went to the same high school as Yoko. Yamagishi tries to write that off as a coincidence, but Yoko then admits that he used to be her boyfriend! She explains that he was actually the one who broke up with her, and that she couldn't have killed him. Conan takes a minute to collect his thoughts, and notices a dent in the floor. Then, he realizes the truth behind the case! But just as he does, Kogoro continues to accuse the manager Yamagishi. However, Conan knows this isn't right! He kicks an ashtray at Kogoro's head, knocking him out, and uses the voice changing bowtie to explain the case with Kogoro's voice, as Kogoro is knocked out in a chair. He says that the truth is that if Yamagishi or Yoko were the culprit, that since it was Yoko's room, they'd have prepared some evidence to make it look impossible for them to have done it. He goes on to explain that Yuuko also cannot be the culprit, for she would've steadfastly denied ever meeting the victim in order to have no motive. He says that none of the people gathered here are the murderer. He then explains about the hair the body was holding, and that Yamagishi tried to hide it, thinking that Yoko was the culprit. He explains that the whole situation has been prepared by someone to make Yoko look guilty, and that someone is the victim himself! Indeed, the case was a suicide! He explains that the victim froze a knife in a block of ice and turned the heat up, then jumped off a chair and stabbed himself in the back! As the ice melts, all that is left is his body with a knife in his back in the middle of Yoko's room, making her look like the killer! He explains that it was likely because the victim was still in love with Yoko, and wanted to confess his feelings. He had followed Yuuko into the room, thinking she was Yoko, and when she fought him away, he made up his mind to commit suicide. When the police then find the victim's diary it backs up this claim, as it is filled with his feelings about Yoko. Megure closes the case, and everyone goes home. The next day, Ran and Conan see Yoko singing on a TV outside, and Ran comments on how strong Yoko is for still being able to go on after that case, and that she feels like she's having trouble going on without Shinichi... Then, after the credits roll, there is a scene where Conan uses the voice changing bowtie to call Ran using Shinichi's voice. He says that he's been involved in a difficult case, and that he'll be away for a while, but he promises to return someday...
